The Carmelite Way Pilgrimage
November 2011
Led by Fr Denis Andrew O Carm (Prior Provincial), a group of 26 people participated in a 43km pilgrimage in the beautiful Yarra Valley organised by The Carmelite Centre Melbourne. The pilgrimage took place over three days and is the second of what is to be an annual November event.
After being commissioned in a special liturgy at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middle Park on 6 November, the group left by bus (provided by Whitefriars College, Donvale) on Friday 11 November at 8.00am. The pilgrims travelled to Lilydale and walked to Mt Evelyn along the Warburton trail. At Mt Evelyn they were joined by Fr Ken Peterson and Sr Kathleen Murphy from the Sancta Sophia Mediation Community in Warburton who provided a welcome to pilgrims and shared prayer and reflection on finding God in the environment and using walking as a time for meditation and focus. The pilgrims were also encouraged to remain open to how this experience may change them over the coming weeks and months as they continued to reflect on and absorb it.
Each evening after dinner the pilgrims gathered for a reflection on Carmelite Spirituality – particularly finding God in the simple things of everyday life and events. During this time Fr Denis provided a brief overview of the Carmelite tradition and history.
The pilgrimage finished at the Sancta Sophia Meditation Community where Fr Denis was the main celebrant in a Mass thanking God for blessing the weekend. This was followed by a BBQ kindly provided by the Sancta Sophia community after which the pilgrims left for home.

Fr Denis completes gruelling 42k marathon in Dili, East Timor
June 2011
Fr Denis Andrew, Prior Provincial of Australia and East Timor, and his nephew Michael Zammit successfully completed the gruelling 42km Peace Marathon held in Dili on 18 June.
President Ramos Horta fired the starting gun at 6.30am. Hundreds joined in for a half-marathon and the seven kilometre fun run. Only forty-one runners undertook the full marathon. The marathon was two laps of a 21.1km course.
“The first lap was rather exciting as we were surrounded by the half-marathon and 7km Fun Run participants. The local Timorese were fantastic in their support from the sidelines, as were our own Carmelite students”, Fr Denis said. “Then the heat started to kick in. This was accentuated by the smog of the dry season and the smoke from the cooking fires of the locals along the course. There were obstacles such as the river crossing (fortunately it was the dry season and the water was low) and the odd dog and pig straying across the path. As well there were a lot of motorbikes and cars on the course in the second lap. And that’s saying nothing about our aching legs. Still the locals were highly excited, especially the children. They constantly ran with us wanting to do ‘high fives’. And one group brought my nephew Michael into their soccer game as he passed."

A Carmelite Reflection Day
April 2011
The Carmelite Centre Melbourne hosted Fr Peter Malone who led a session on ‘Jesus on Screen’ on Saturday 9 April.
This was a perfect reflection day prior to celebrating Easter and is Part One of two sessions. The second session will take place on Saturday 6 August at the Carmelite Centre.
A group of interested and lively participants were taken on a cinematic journey of a number of Jesus films by this internationally respected film critic, former president of SIGNIS (the World Catholic Association for Communication) and writer on theology and spirituality. Peter brought to this series his personal contact with prominent film directors and screen stars as well as his scholarship as a theologian and film critic.
Watching the film clips – including King of Kings(Ray, 1961); The Greatest Story Ever Told (Stevens 1965); The Gospel According to St Matthew Pier (Pasolini, 1966); Godspell (Greene, 1973); Jesus Christ, Superstar Norman (Jewison, 1973); Jesus of Nazareth(Zeffireli, 1977), took the group on a journey down memory lane!
Of particular interest for the educators and teachers in attendance was how to use this medium to assist in proclaiming the Good News to student and adults.
For others, the film clips stirred hearts and minds recalling past images of Jesus Christ on film and how this encouraged one’s own faith.
Watching the clips, participants commented how earlier it was the divinity of Jesus being the focus and later films portraying both the divinity and humanity of Christ.
The group reflected on some scenes such as the Adulterous woman and the different emphasis that film directors took and how this impacted on the viewer and one’s personal relationship with Jesus.
Fr Peter, being an engaging storyteller, situated these films with a cultural and historical context.
The Carmelite Centre is looking forward to Part Two of Fr Peter’s series on Saturday 6 August when he will lead a reflection on Jesus films from the 80’s to the present day.

Carmelite Contemplative Bushwalk
April 2011
Organised by The Carmelite Centre Melbourne, a group of 25 people enjoyed walking in the lush surrounds of Mt Macedon regional park on 26 March. The group took part in a contemplative bushwalk from Camel’s Hump around the mountain then to the Cross and returning to Camel’s Hump. Participants gathered at St Joseph’s Church in Port Melbourne at 10.00am and then travelled by car pool and mini bus to Mt Macedon. A cool day provided a perfect environment for a bushwalk.
Led by Carmelite Prior Provincial, Fr Denis Andrew the group gathered at the beginning of the walk to reflect on the beauty of the environment and the opportunity the day provided to take time to ponder God’s gifts and blessings. Many participants did not previously know each other and there were many new and hearty conversations throughout the day as well as time to be alone and walk in the gentle bushland taking in the sweeping views and stunning landscape. Some completed the walk to the Cross and then took time out for writing and reading while others completed the walk back to the car park.
This walk was inspired by the inaugural ‘Carmelite Way’ Pilgrimage from Lilydale to Warburton last November. After this walk the mix of solitude, prayer and friendship was a regenerative and life enriching experience according to feedback from participants.Another contemplative day bushwalk is being planned for Saturday 27 August and plans are underway for the 2011 ‘Carmelite Way’ Pilgrimage to be held in Warburton on 11-13 November.
