2018DMPWeb150A plaque commemorating the ten Carmelites who died in Dachau Concentration Camp was unveiled by Fr Fernando Millán Romeral (Prior General) during the International Course for young Carmelites in August.

The plaque sits in the camp's Memorial Centre among many others commemorating those who died. Blesseds Titus Brandsma and Hilary Januszewski are among the 8 Poles and 2 Dutch whose names are recorded on the plaque.

The ceremony began with a welcome by the prioress of the Discalced Carmelite nuns of Dachau, called the Carmel of the Precious Blood, who explained the Sisters' mission as:  reparation and prayer for reconciliation and peace.

The Carmelites present went in procession to the Cam Memorial Centre for the unveiling and then to the site of Barracks 26 where most of the Carmelite prisioners lived.

After prayers at the barracks the Eucharist was celebrated in the chapel of the convent.

Those named on the plaque are: Titus Brandsma, Hilary Januszewski, Szymon Buszta, Leon Koza, Bruno Makowski, Berthold Mejcher, Franeiszek Nowakowski, Rafael Tijhuis, Albert Irabanski and Elizeusz Wszelaki.

Fr Fernando concluded the celebration asking that “the witness of Blessed Titus Brandsma and Blessed Hilary Januszewski would help the Carmelites of the Twenty-first century to be men and women of reconciliation and signs of God’s love for every human being.”
