Our New Novices

Fr Bruce Clark (Prior & Novice Master) received the new novices together with Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial).

Br Januario Ordained Deacon

2016JPD2Web200Br Januario Pinto was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Denis Hart on Saturday 19 November at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middle Park.

After some pastoral ministry as a deacon in his home parish of Luro (Timor-Leste) Januario will return to Australia to continue his studies towards a Masters degree in Theology. He hopes to be ordained a priest in Luro next year.

2016 Carmelite Pilgrimage

2016PilWeb200LED by Fr Ken Petersen and Brother Matthew Tonini, Carmelites of Australia and East Timor, a group of 19 participated in the Seventh Annual 45 km pilgrimage in the beautiful Yarra Valley. The pilgrimage took place over three days and was organized by The Carmelite Centre Melbourne.

The walk was along the rail trail from Lilydale to the Sancta Sophia Meditation Community in Warburton.

25th Anniversary of Santa Cruz Massacre

SantaCruzMassacre2015On 12 November 1991 more than 250 mainly young people were shot as they sought refuge in the Santa Cruz Cemetery, Dili. The pro-Independence demonstrators had begun a peaceful march from a local Church to the Cemetery. Pursued by Indonesian soldiers as they approach the Cemetery many sought refuge within its walls. An estimated 200 Indonesian soldiers opened fire on hundreds of unarmed civilians.

Brother Agedo Bento, a young Timorese Carmelite, and pdf Sister Susan Connelly (92 KB) , a Good Samaritan Sister, reflect on what happened that fateful day.

2016 Remembrance Mass

2016RMWeb200You, your family and friends are warmly invited to join us for this year’s Mass of Remembrance at 6.00pm on Saturday 12 November at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, cnr Richardson and Wright Streets, Middle Park, Vic.

In this special mass we remember, give thanks and pray for those who are now in God’s care. We draw strength from each other as we gently continue the journey of entrusting our loved ones into God’s care.

Donors' Mass & High Tea

2016DMWeb200A Mass of Thanksgiving and High Tea for Donors was held last Tuesday at St Joseph's, Port Melbourne to celebrate 15 years of Australian involvement in the Carmelite Mission in Timor-Leste.

Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) was principal celebrant at the mass which was concelebrated by Frs Pat Harney and Matthew McPhee. Our Carmelite students led the singing accompanied by Fr David Hofman on the organ. The event was attended by 55 supporters and their guests.

Carmelite Bishop visits Timor-Leste

2016CBVTL1Web200Bishop Antonio Vitalino OCarm, Bishop of Beja in Portugal, visited our Carmelites in Hera yesterday. The Bishop was on a visit to Timor as Papal Envoy and requested a meeting with his Carmelite brothers and sisters. He was greeted at the entrance to Santo Elias community in traditional Timorese style with music and singing and being presented with a tais.

Recently, Bishop Antonio celebrated Mass with the members of the Carmelite General Congregation in Fatima, Portugal.

Fr Bruce Clark talks about his life in Timor where he has been looking after young Carmelite novices and students since 2011. This year the Carmelites are celebrating 15 years of Australian Carmelite involvement in Timor-Leste.
