The Rising Seas: A global challenge

2020TRSWeb150Our oceans are on the rise. In Polar Regions climate change explodes glaciers. In all parts of the earth, as temperatures soar, oceans get hotter and expand. Global sea levels have gone up and up over the last century especially in recent decades. In 2018 global mean sea level was 8.1 centimetres above the 1993 average – the highest annual average on record. This has profound effects all over the world as 8 out of 10 of the world’s largest cities are near a coast. What can be done to fight land loss? This is part 1 of a 2 part series from the Carmelite NGO. Part 1 explores the effects in Louisiana. Part 2 (to be published in June) will look at what is happening in Indonesia.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
