3 Carmelites ordained in Timor-Leste

São Tiago (St James) Church in Hera, Timor-Leste, was filled to capacity on 2 September for the ordinations of 3 Carmelites. Br Silvestre Alves was ordained deacon and Brs Amandio Soares Salsinha and Narcizio Da Costa Vilanova were ordained priests.

The Cardinal Archbishop of Dili, Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, SDB, was the ordaining prelate and was joined by Bishop Leandro Alves (a relative of Silvestre), Fr Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial), Fr Carlito Da Costa Araújo (Provincial Delegate), other Carmelite, religious and diocesan priests.

Narcizio will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Therese of the Child Jesus Parish in Ossu on 9 September and Amandio at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Railaco, Emera, on 23 September.

Following the Ordination Mass a large crowd of family and friends continued the festivities at the Carmelite Community in Hera.

Congratulations, Amandio, Narcizio and Silvestre!

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
