In an historic first 5 Australian Lay Carmelites visited the Lay Carmelites in Timor-Leste between 12-21 July. They were accompanied by Fr Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial). The visit was to develop friendship ties between the 2 groups. A highlight was the meeting with a large group of Timorese Lay Carmelites at their Central House in Fatuhada where the Australians were warmly welcomed and introduced to the culture of Timor-Leste. They were dressed in traditional Timorese cloths called tais.
Lay Carmelites from Australia were Angela Zakarias, Jim Milford, Libby Edwards and Leanne Allen. During their trip they were able to join in the celebrations for both major Carmelite solemnities: Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Prophet Elijah.
Also included in the trip were visits to the Carmelite chapel at Guisarudo and the Student House in Hera as well as the Carmelite Sisters orphanage.
There are more than 300 Lay Carmelites in Timor-Leste.
