Matthew ordained deacon

2020MTDWeb150aOn the third attempt, Matthew was ordained deacon by Archbishop Mark Coleridge in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Coorparoo (QLD) on Saturday 26 September. The two previous attempts had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne. While Matthew’s parents, Alison and Flavio, were not able to be there, Matthew’s aunt and uncle, Carlo and Maree, were able to be present and vested Matthew in his diaconal robes. In his homily, Archbishop Mark remarked that the word ‘deacon’ comes from the Greek, originally meaning ‘through the dust’.  A deacon, he said, was a messenger, one who travels through the dust of the world to deliver a message of great importance. It is the message of God, the Good News, that Matthew is called to deliver.
